Write Lines Task (WLT)

A Write Lines Task makes the subject type a given phrase, usually a mantra or a trigger phrase, a set number of times. A wrong keystroke shows a punishment phrase and restarts the line. As the subject types, interrupter phrases appear over the screen at intervals to break their focus.

Line-writing is a classic punishment, but the repetition also produces its own trance and internalises the phrase, in the same way an Engram Completion Task does.

The session completes when the required number of lines has been typed correctly.

How typing works

  • The phrase is shown at the top of the screen. The subject types it character by character; the next expected character must match exactly, including case, punctuation and spaces.

  • Modifier and navigation keys are ignored. Backspace does nothing: a mistake cannot be corrected.

  • A wrong character counts as a mistake, shows a punishment phrase, and resets the current line to the beginning. A running Mistakes count and Lines Completed count are shown under the input.

  • Completed lines scroll up in a history list with a green tick; failed attempts show a red cross.

  • The q quit shortcut is disabled in this session type so it cannot fire while typing.

Punishment phrases to show if wrong letter

Phrases shown when a wrong character is typed, chosen at random.

Use Interrupters?

Turns interrupters on or off. Default on.

Randomize Interrupter Base (±20%)?

Intended to randomise the interrupter frequency by up to ±20%. Default on. In the current player the ±20% randomisation is always applied whatever this box says.

Interrupter Frequency (Keystrokes before Interrupter)

Base number of correct keystrokes between interrupters. Default 40, randomised by ±20% each time.

Overlay Display Time (in Milliseconds)

How long a punishment or interrupter overlay stays on screen. Default 3000. The player adds 500 ms for every five words in the phrase, so set this for a phrase of four words or fewer.

Lines as Punishment for misspell

Extra lines added to the target every time the subject makes a mistake. Default 0.

Optional features: Distractors, Wall Distractors, Audio and Custom CSS. Audio is a common addition here; see Audio.

Custom CSS

The most common use of custom CSS in a Write Lines Task is styling the text: the phrase header, the typing area (.wordString and .blinking-cursor), the counters and the history list (#line-holder). See Custom CSS.
